Role
ESPN's player page (indexed, not read live) shows he started the opener and played 28 minutes. It says Jarace Walker replaced him in the first unit for the next game, and that his playing time may drop to the lower 20s as a reserve. His minutes in his three games were 28, 20 and 20 (ESPN game log, through Oct 25). ESPN lists 2 games played, but its log shows 3. Preseason and offseason coverage (Yahoo/IndyStar, Last Word on Sports) had him as the sixth man, covering the role left by Bennedict Mathurin's trade. I did not find a usage rate for this season. I also found nothing on rest plans or back-to-backs. Tyrese Haliburton is back from a torn Achilles and says he has no restrictions.
Optimists say he fits Indiana's fast pace and has a clear sixth-man job. Coach Rick Carlisle has praised him in camp, and he can guard multiple positions with a 7-2 wingspan. He scored 17 points in 10 minutes at the FanJam scrimmage. He also scored 14 points in 20 minutes on 66.7% shooting at Brooklyn on Oct. 25 (ESPN log).
Skeptics point to the demotion from the starting five after one game, and to a projected workload of only the low 20s in minutes. His start was shaky: he shot 10% from the field in 20 minutes against Dallas on Oct. 23 and 40% in 28 minutes in the opener. The Indianapolis Star described a preseason adjustment period to Indiana's pace. Haliburton's return also leaves fewer shots for a bench wing.
Where analysts split
The open question is how big his bench role becomes. Preseason framing said he would be an essential rotation piece and the Mathurin replacement. ESPN's early-season note says his minutes may fall to the low 20s. I found no analyst piece debating this directly, so this contrast comes from separate sources.
