Lauri Markkanen
Markkanen is Utah's top scorer and a lead option when healthy. He is coming back from a right wrist sprain that cost him one game, and the frontcourt around him is thin.
Role
Through his first four games he averaged 28.5 minutes, 16.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 2.5 threes (CBS/RotoWire, checked 2 November). Those four games were all before the injury. Usage rate is not in what I found. A CBS/RotoWire item said he was available for Saturday vs. Portland, and Athlon also reported him available after missing one game. The wire note here still says questionable. Josh Green was expected to go back to a bench role with him in the lineup (CBS). Jaren Jackson Jr. is out at least six weeks with a torn MCL, and Jusuf Nurkic is out with a foot injury. Yahoo reported that Jaxson Hayes and Mo Bamba project to take most of Jackson's minutes at center. Keyonte George, Darryn Peterson and Ace Bailey are the other core players named. I did not find his minutes or usage since the return, so this is not confirmed.
With Jackson and Nurkic out, Markkanen is the main frontcourt scorer on a team whose three straight losses came by a combined 20 points (Yahoo/Field Level Media). Reports say the wrist injury was a sprain, which would be the milder of the two outcomes a physical therapist sketched in ClutchPoints. He missed only one game. Yahoo also noted Bailey and Peterson could take more offense with Jackson and Markkanen out, which suggests his volume would be protected.
Wrist injuries can linger, especially on a shooting hand, and he left the Grizzlies game after six minutes. ClutchPoints noted he has struggled to stay on the court because of various ailments. Last season's line is only 5 games and 715 minutes, a small sample in the data we hold. Peterson and George are also productive scorers: George had 31 points and Peterson 18 in the Spurs loss without Markkanen.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether the wrist sprain limits him or causes more missed games. Coverage is mostly injury reporting, and I did not find analysts arguing over his role. Whether he plays through it, and at what minutes, is not settled in what I found.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
