Mario Hezonja

Consensus #187 · PF77 · tier 6Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Hezonja is a bench forward in his first NBA season since 2019-20, and his role is real but not yet fixed. He played 19 minutes in the opener, but the 10-man rotation is still being sorted.

Role

He came off the bench in the Oct. 22 opener at Philadelphia and played 19 minutes (NBA.com player page). Cavs On SI/Yahoo reported that all of his minutes (18:38) were at power forward. He took 13 shots, as many as Cleveland's other four reserves combined (NBC Sports). Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor reported before the season that coach Kenny Atkinson said Hezonja is "going to be in the mix" for the rotation. The Yahoo/Cleveland.com preseason piece lists seven settled rotation players: Harden, Mitchell, Watson, Mobley, Allen, Merrill and Tyson. Atkinson wants a stable 10-man group but says 13 players deserve minutes. Fox Sports/RotoWire names Tomlin, Porter, Proctor and rookie Meleek Thomas as other bench competitors. No source I found gives a usage rate or a back-to-back rest plan. I did not read a rotation tracker or depth chart page.

The case for

Hezonja is a 255-to-260-pound forward who gives Cleveland a bench big willing to shoot threes and attack downhill. Atkinson likened him to a "diesel train" in transition. He earned a rotation spot through preseason (13 points in 17 minutes against Orlando, 12 in 21 in the finale) and then played 19 minutes in the opener. NBC Sports said his role "projects to be important." The Cavs On SI writer noted that Cleveland was +2.6 per 100 possessions with him on the floor and suggested Atkinson may have to give him more.

The case against

The rotation is crowded. Roughly seven players look locked in, and the last three spots go to a pool Atkinson describes as 13 deep. His opener was inefficient: 5-of-13 from the field and 0-of-5 from three. NBC Sports said he was not a must-add after the opener and not a must-draft player in most leagues. Fox Sports/RotoWire says his value depends on how much playing time he can win. Atkinson also said he is still evaluating, and Cleveland used mixed starter and reserve lineups in the opener, so minutes could swing from game to game.

Where analysts split

Whether Hezonja holds a steady backup power forward role with about 19 or more minutes a night, or gets squeezed by the 13-deep pool. The Cavs On SI/Yahoo voices expect his minutes to grow. Fox Sports/RotoWire and NBC Sports stress the crowded rotation. The opener is one game, so the question is unsettled.
