Precious Achiuwa

Consensus #160 · PF41 · tier 7Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Achiuwa is a frontcourt big whose role is still moving: he was a bench backup in the first two games, then got a start at power forward, and the wire's ankle injury adds a new unknown.

Role

Rotowire and ESPN's fantasy blurb, both from about 21 hours to 2 days before this search, call him a backup behind Domantas Sabonis. ESPN's game log shows 29 minutes at the Clippers on Oct. 21 and 26 minutes against Portland on Oct. 23, off the bench both times. CBS, citing Frankie Cartoscelli of KHTK, then had him starting Sunday against Memphis at power forward next to Sabonis. I did not find why he started, so I can't say whether it was a one-off or a lineup change. Rotowire says the power forward spot is Keegan Murray's to lose, and that Achiuwa is expected to come off the bench when the first unit is at full strength. The Kings' frontcourt also includes De'Andre Hunter, Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell, per Sactown Sports. I found no minutes tracker or usage figure for this season. His minutes after the ankle injury are unknown. I found no practice report or coach's update dated after the wire note.

The case for

He opened the season with 15 and 14 points in his first two games, per ESPN's game log. Last season he started 57 of 73 games, and Sactown Sports says he averaged 15.7 points and 9.2 rebounds over the final 25 games. If Murray or another forward is out, he is the obvious next starter, as in the preseason opener. The club also re-signed him for two years and $11.5 million.

The case against

Rotowire says his best prognosis is a backup frontcourt role once the Kings are healthy. A Mogaz piece says the Kings no longer need the emergency version of Achiuwa from last season's injury-hit stretch. It adds that with key scorers back, he shouldn't have to force shots the way he did then. That suggests lower usage than his late-season numbers. The ankle injury also puts his availability in question until the club says more.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether he is a starter or a backup. Rotowire and ESPN say he is a bench big behind Sabonis, while a Sunday report had him starting at power forward. I found no coverage that settles it, and I found no analyst arguing either side at length.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
