Ronald Holland II

Consensus #228 · PF92 · tier 6Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Ron Holland II is a bench forward on a deep Pistons team. His role looked secure after the offseason departures, but a three-minute season opener has put his minutes in question.

Role

No starting role has been reported for this season. Fox Sports' player page (undated, checked 26 October) says he figures to back up John Collins after Tobias Harris left for the Spurs and Isaiah Stewart was traded to the Grizzlies. In the opener, per Detroit Sports Nation (21 October) and Piston Powered (about two days old), he played about three minutes while Javonte Green took his bench minutes. Last season he averaged 19.9 minutes over 78 games with five starts, per Fox Sports. I found no minutes figures after the opener, so his current share is unknown. His preseason minutes were 24 against the Suns and 15 against Minnesota, per RotoWire. Our own card shows only 3 GP and 144 MIN, which doesn't match the 78 games reported elsewhere, so I've used no figures from it.

The case for

Two rotation spots opened when Harris left and Stewart was traded, and Detroit exercised his 2027-28 option on opening day. He gives defensive versatility and steals, and Piston Powered called him a useful bench piece on a very good team. The Athletic's Hunter Patterson, via RotoWire, expected him to get a bigger role this season. His preseason line against the Suns was 14 points, five steals and two blocks in 24 minutes. One bad opener is a small sample.

The case against

He shot 25.3% from three last season, and Detroit is leaning harder on shooting this year. Green shot 38.1% and went for 19 points in the opener, which Piston Powered says already puts Holland's minutes in jeopardy. He also picked up two quick fouls in his short stint. Last spring, Bickerstaff dropped him from the playoff rotation partly because of his spacing, per CBS Sports and RotoWire.

Where analysts split

The question is whether Detroit values his defense and athleticism enough to keep him in the rotation over Green, a better shooter, when spacing matters. Fox Sports and The Athletic (via RotoWire) read the offseason moves as clearing a path for him. Piston Powered and Detroit Sports Nation read the opener as a warning sign. Piston Powered also points out that it was one game.
