Sam Hauser

Consensus #204 · PF82 · tier 6Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Hauser is a low-usage, three-point-shooting wing who looks set for a rotation role off Boston's bench, but I found no regular-season coverage of how he has actually been used.

Role

CBS Sports/RotoWire (Oct 10 note) projected him to open the season as the backup small forward behind Paul George. A CBS/Fox preseason-finale note says he is expected to play a rotational bench role, competing with Jordan Walsh, Baylor Scheierman, Hugo Gonzalez and Ron Harper Jr. for minutes. A Yahoo/SI season guide (published within the last week) quotes Joe Mazzulla saying a few starters are locked in but the full rotation will be fluid. I found no minutes or usage figures for this season and no starting-five report. His rest on Oct 16 was a preseason-finale rest for Tatum, George, White and others, not an injury, and he carries no designation. I did not find whether he sits back-to-backs.

The case for

RotoWire (Jul 27, citing John Schuhmann of NBA.com) says his role could become more secure after Boston swapped Jaylen Brown for Paul George, with more three-point attempts coming. CBS notes George's durability concerns could open more wing minutes, and that he could gain if George, Tatum, White or Pritchard miss time. A Hardwood Houdini piece (Oct 1) calls him poised for a bounceback season. RotoWire describes him as one of the league's better shooters, and last season he made a career-high 49 starts.

The case against

Boston has many young wings competing for the same minutes: Scheierman, Gonzalez, Walsh and Harper. Mazzulla has said the rotation will be fluid. RotoWire says his role may fluctuate with matchups. Another headline mentions a 'Sam Hauser conundrum', saying the young wings' breakouts could cost him his spot. The Fox page notes he took heat for playoff struggles and was in trade rumors all summer. His fantasy value is also narrow, coming almost entirely from three-point shooting.

Where analysts split

The question is how firm his bench spot is against the young wings. CBS and RotoWire say he has a strong grip on a rotation spot, while Boston-focused commentary says the young wings could take it. Reporting I found does not settle whether he stays ahead of them.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
