Adonai Mitchell
Mitchell opened the season as a near every-down WR2 and then lost four games to a finger injury. He came back in Week 7 as a part-time receiver behind Garrett Wilson and rookie Omar Cooper, and what he does from here depends on whether he wins snaps back.
Role
Before the injury, he played 61 of 74 snaps in Week 2 and led the Jets with 12 targets (NBC Sports, CBS Sports). In his Week 7 return against Miami he played 26 offensive snaps, third among Jets wideouts behind Wilson (50) and Cooper (38) (RotoWire). ESPN's Sunday recap has him fourth among Jets wideouts in snaps and routes, which doesn't match RotoWire's third. Either way he is below Wilson and Cooper. He has 15 targets from the first two games and 3 from Week 7. Competition for targets comes from Wilson, Cooper and tight ends Mason Taylor and Kenyon Sadiq. Tim Patrick took snaps while Mitchell was out, and CBS says Mitchell should take a lot of those back. Geno Smith is the quarterback.
Optimists point to Weeks 1 and 2. He was the WR2 next to Wilson, played virtually every snap, and drew 29.3 percent of Smith's attempts in Week 2. The team praised him all offseason and Fowler reported the Jets wanted a sizable jump from him. Week 7 was his first game back from a finger injury, so the 26 snaps and 0-for-3 may reflect a ramp-up. CBS expects him to absorb Patrick's snaps. FantasyData still calls him the WR2 once healthy.
Skeptics see a crowded target tree. Cooper played 82 percent of snaps in Week 6 (6 catches on 7 targets, 103 yards and a touchdown) and topped 100 yards again in Week 7. Mitchell's 26 snaps came in a game where he finished with no catches. RotoWire says his opportunities look limited with Wilson, Cooper and two tight ends competing for the same targets. His track record includes drops and inconsistent catching, and he never rose above WR4 as a Colts rookie.
Where analysts split
The question is whether Mitchell goes back to being the clear WR2 or settles behind Cooper as the third receiver. CBS and FantasyData expect the pre-injury WR2 role to return. RotoWire's Week 7 note and ESPN's snap and route data point to a reduced role. CBS itself says it is unclear how his return affects Cooper. One game back is too small a sample to settle it.
