Puka Nacua

Consensus #4 · WR2Week 2: vs NYG, 24th vs WRUpdated Sep 4

Nacua is the Rams' clear No. 1 receiver and one of the highest-volume target earners in the league, so the only real question about him is health, not role.

Role

Full-time X/flanker with slot snaps, playing essentially every offensive series when healthy and running a route on the large majority of Matthew Stafford's dropbacks. He is the primary read on early downs and in the intermediate game, and the Rams also use him on manufactured touches (screens, jet/end-around carries) to boost his volume. Davante Adams is the co-starter and takes a meaningful share of red-zone and downfield looks, with the tight ends and the back-end wideouts/rookie depth pieces filling the rest; none of them threaten Nacua's snaps. Running-back involvement (Kyren Williams) caps overall passing volume more than any receiver behind him does.

The case for

Optimists point out that his target share and route participation are at or near the top of the league, that Stafford trusts him on every down and situation, and that his floor is propped up by yards after catch and the volume of short, high-completion targets the Rams design for him. When he plays, he has essentially never been a low-usage player, and a healthy Nacua in a Stafford offense is a weekly high-volume anchor regardless of matchup.

The case against

Sceptics focus on the body: he has now missed or been limited by multiple soft-tissue and back issues, including lower-back soreness that disrupted his summer, and he plays a physical, contact-heavy brand of receiver that produces in-game cramping and knocks. Add Adams siphoning touchdown equity and a run-leaning game plan when the Rams are ahead, and the concern is games where he is either capped or exits early rather than any loss of role.

Where analysts split

Whether the undisclosed designation reflects lingering maintenance on a known issue (back/soft tissue) that could quietly limit his snaps or route volume, versus a routine listing that ends with him playing a full workload — the split is about durability and in-game availability, not about his standing in the offense.
