Mike Evans
Evans has been a productive lead receiver for San Francisco this season, but he is now hurt on top of a rib injury he has played through since Week 3, so his availability is the question for the near term.
Role
Through five games he had 24 catches on 34 targets for 326 yards and three touchdowns (CBS, Yahoo). SI put his snap share at 57.9 percent over those five games, and he was over 50 percent in four of them. He led the team in targets and yards in Week 4, and he had 3 catches for 94 yards on 5 targets in Week 6 before leaving. Heavy reports Deebo Samuel news that raises the stakes for Evans, and Christian Kirk was ruled out with a calf injury for Week 6. RotoBlaster's Week 6 write-up named Jordan Watkins and Brandin Cooks as the receivers who could pick up targets and snaps when he is out. I did not read a depth chart, so I can't say how the work is split beyond that.
Evans has produced even while hurt. He had 5 catches for 76 yards with fractured ribs in Week 4 and 7 for 113 and a touchdown in Week 5. NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco expected him to play in Week 6, and he did, with a 54-yard gain in the first half. NBC's Jennifer Lee Chan reported after the game that the Achilles is intact and he will miss only a little time, which points to a short absence rather than a lost season. With Samuel and Kirk also dealing with injuries, the target volume should be there when he returns.
He is 33 and has now been playing through two injuries. NBC noted he has been on the injury report for much of the season, and the Achilles may have been too much to play through. He did not practice at all in Week 6 week and was listed questionable for nearly every game. Even a short Achilles absence means missed games, and the rib fracture is still there. Per RotoBlaster's Week 6 write-up, other 49ers receivers (Watkins, Cooks) are the ones in line for his work while he is out.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is about how long he is out and whether the 49ers should rest him through the bye. Chan reports he will miss a little time. Analyst Chase Senior, quoted by Pro Football Network, wants him held out at Atlanta and then given the bye week to heal. Before Week 6, beat reporters also split on whether he would play: Lombardi and Maiocco expected him to, while Krueger said he would be very surprised if he did. No official return date has been given.
