Jaxon Smith-Njigba is Seattle's clear No. 1 receiver and the center of its passing offense for the rest of the 17-game season. Current coverage disagrees only about how much of that workload he can keep.
Role
He is the primary perimeter receiver in Sam Darnold's offense. ESPN's player page says he is positioned to handle about one-third of Seattle's targets. Rotowire's page shows 50 targets through five games (37 catches, 583 yards, 7 TDs), and FantasyData cited a 44% target share after two games. He drew 16 targets in the Thursday overtime loss to Denver, and ESPN counts five 100-yard games in his first six. Rashid Shaheed and TE AJ Barner were named in CBS's offseason notes as supporting pass catchers. I did not find a current snap share or depth chart, so I give no figure for either. Rotowire says an ankle issue limited him in practice before Week 6, but he was cleared for that game.
He has run through the season at an elite level. ESPN reports five 100-yard games in six, after a 2025 in which he was named Offensive Player of the Year (119 catches on 162 targets, 1,793 yards, 10 TDs, per CBS). Seattle also lost RB Kenneth Walker to Kansas City, so the offense may have to throw more. Rotowire notes this could add route volume to offset any efficiency drop. He also dominates Darnold's attention, and he was the quarterback's most reliable target when the Denver game was on the line (Yahoo).
Newsweek argues that holding such a large share of Seattle's receiving output will be hard. Defenses may focus more on him, and that could push Darnold toward other targets. Rotowire flags some risk that the offense regresses after losing OC Klint Kubiak and Walker. Darnold also struggled against Denver, completing barely half his passes with no touchdown and two interceptions (Heavy). Darnold has missed time with a glute injury this season, and Drew Lock filled in.
Where analysts split
The question is whether his target share holds near its current extreme level as defenses adjust and Seattle's offense changes. Some outlets expect a pass-heavy offense to feed him even more. Newsweek expects defensive attention to spread the targets, and Rotowire worries about efficiency regression without Kubiak and Walker. All of them agree he is Seattle's top option. I found no disagreement about his role.
