Andre Szmyt

Consensus #300 · K27Week 9: at NO, 28th vs KUpdated Oct 20

Szmyt is Cleveland's secure starting kicker for the rest of the 17-game season, and his value depends on how often a low-scoring Browns offense gets him attempts.

Role

He is the lone placekicker. In the sources I read, no competitor is mentioned this season, and nothing suggests a competition for the job. Yahoo (Oct 19) has him at 12 made on 13 field-goal attempts this season, and the Ravens game was Oct 18. He kicked the game-winning field goal in the 13-10 win. Earlier this month he hit a 56-yarder with seconds left to beat Pittsburgh, per Fox Sports. Volume depends on Cleveland's offense. The Browns lost 17-12 to the Jets in Week 5, and Fox Sports described their offense as exposed in that game. I did not find snap or attempt-per-game trackers for him.

The case for

Yahoo calls him one of the league's most consistent and clutch kickers. He has repeatedly been asked to make go-ahead or tying kicks and has delivered, including from 56 yards. ESPN's page showed him perfect on field goals through the Jets game, and a PFF page indexed about 80 days ago had him 2nd among kickers in field-goal grade. Cleveland's close games keep putting him in scoring spots.

The case against

Cleveland's offense is weak and scores in small amounts. That caps both his extra-point volume and his number of field-goal chances. RotoWire's note from last season said that, kicking in this Cleveland offense, he was not a recommended fantasy target. He has also missed extra points this season, including one against the Jets that Fox Sports flagged. His kickoff grade on PFF was poor, ranking 28th of 32 on that indexed page. Against Baltimore he missed a 48-yard field goal.

Where analysts split

broad agreement on his job security and accuracy. The only open question is about his team, not him: whether Cleveland's offense produces enough drives to give him steady attempts. I found no analyst split specifically on Szmyt.
