Drew Stevens

Consensus #185 · K7Week 9: vs LAR, 26th vs KUpdated Oct 20

Stevens is Washington's settled starting kicker as an undrafted rookie, with a fair field-goal record through the first five games and one early-season weak spot on kicks of 50 yards or more.

Role

He is the only kicker on the roster in the reporting I found. The Washington Post reported on Aug. 17 that the Commanders released Jake Moody, so no one is competing for the job. His workload depends on how often Washington's offense stalls and how many extra points it attempts. ESPN's game log (an indexed copy, not a live check) shows 2 to 3 field-goal attempts per game over five games: 2-of-2 vs. IND, 2-of-2 vs. NYG, 2-of-3 at DAL, and 1-of-2 at PHI. It shows 9-of-11 field goals and 8-of-11 extra points on the season. The long-term question is whether he keeps the job, which SI noted still has to be settled in the regular season.

The case for

He beat Moody clearly in camp, going 43-of-48 on field goals against Moody's 36-of-47, according to SI. He has said his range is comfortable to at least 60 yards, and he has already hit from 57. ESPN's indexed table shows every attempt under 50 yards made (7-of-7 from 20 to 49). The team wants stability at the position after signing 20 kickers since 2020, so he should get time to work through any slump.

The case against

He is a rookie with no NFL track record, and he is 2-of-4 from 50 or more on the season. He has missed 3 of 11 extra points in the ESPN table, which is unusually poor for a kicker, including 1-of-2 in the 27-27 tie with the Giants. Washington has also gone through many kickers recently, so a poor stretch could cost him the job. Washington has a 1-3 record with a tie in the five games shown, which adds some uncertainty to the scoring opportunities.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement. I found no analysts disputing his role. The open question is whether his accuracy on kicks of 50 yards or more and on extra points holds up. That is a performance question, not a split in opinion.
