Brian Thomas Jr.

Consensus #244 · WR90Week 9: at BAL, 29th vs WRUpdated Oct 20

Thomas is a shrinking, trade-rumor part-time receiver for now, and his path back to a full role depends on how the Jaguars use him after the bye.

Role

He played 15 of 70 offensive snaps (21%) in Week 6 against Houston, per PFF via Athlon, and none after halftime. In Week 5 he played 37 of 72 (51%). Athlon/Yahoo has him fourth in the rotation behind Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington and rookie Josh Cameron. Cameron played 35 snaps (50%) in Week 6. Travis Hunter also had a season-high nine offensive snaps. Thomas has nine catches for 105 yards and a touchdown through six games. He has been held without a catch in two straight games (five targets across them). The sources give 18 and 20 targets for the season, and I could not reconcile the two. The Jaguars are on a bye now.

The case for

He is a 2024 first-round pick (23rd overall) who had 1,282 yards as a rookie. The Jaguars have not said they want to move him, and Trevor Lawrence said they will keep looking for chances to get him the ball. His Week 6 snap loss followed a clear drop and a slip on a key throw, and no injury was reported. The bye gives the staff time to find better ways to use him. Yardbarker called winning his snaps back the best outcome. Other teams reportedly like him, and a trade could put him in a bigger role elsewhere.

The case against

The offense produced 306 passing yards and four touchdowns from Lawrence without him. Washington (11 targets) and Meyers (10) led the passing game, and Hunter caught all four of his targets. FantasyPros's expert note says he has a 50% route share and 8.1% target share over the last two weeks, a 13% target-per-route rate and 0.44 yards per route run. It advises benching him or moving on. The AP says Jacksonville appears ready to phase him out. Coach Liam Coen's "week to week" line makes every practice an audition.

Where analysts split

The question is whether Thomas is a slumping starter who regains snaps after the bye or is being phased out in favor of Cameron, Washington and Hunter. The AP and Yahoo columnists lean toward phase-out and trade. Others hold that the Jaguars have not signaled a desire to move him and that he can earn the work back. Whether he is traded before the Nov. 10 deadline, as reported, is also unresolved.
