Chris Godwin Jr.

Consensus #130 · WR44Week 9: at CHI, 17th vs WRUpdated Oct 27

Godwin is a short-area, low-yardage possession receiver in a weak Tampa Bay passing game, and Egbuka's absence has not turned that into a bigger role.

Role

Reporting calls him a complementary, short-area piece, not a downfield threat. In Week 3 he was third among Bucs WRs in snap share at 62 percent, behind Ted Hurst (75) and Emeka Egbuka (74). Rotowire's Week 7 note called him the de facto No. 1 receiver with Egbuka out (concussion/foot), but Mayfield threw only 11 passes in the blowout. Targets by game: 6-of-7 in Week 4, 3 in Week 5, 8 in Week 6, 5 in Week 7. Cade Otton and Kenny Gainwell also out-targeted him in Week 5. I did not find a current depth chart or a season-long target share, so I give none.

The case for

Targets are steady and he catches nearly everything thrown to him. He has had at least four catches in three of the last four games, including back-to-back four-catch games. He led the team in targets and catches in Week 4 with rookie Jalon Daniels at QB. With Egbuka sidelined he was the top option in Week 7. If Mayfield stays healthy and Egbuka is out longer, the target volume could stay solid.

The case against

The production is capped. CBS notes he averages 9.0 yards per reception with no touchdowns through seven games. Rotowire's season line through Week 5 was 19-179-0 with only two receptions of 20-plus yards. NBC called him a boom-bust FLEX type and said Daniels's QB play hurts his appeal. The offense is low-volume and he competes with Egbuka, Hurst, Otton and Gainwell for targets.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is whether his steady short-area targets can turn into real fantasy production, or whether he stays capped without downfield work or touchdowns. A sub-question is how much the offense opens up now that Mayfield is back and whether Egbuka's return cuts into Godwin's role. I found no source that says when Egbuka returns.
