Dalton Schultz
Schultz is Houston's starting tight end, but with Nico Collins healthy again he is a modest, low-ceiling pass catcher and not the focal point of the offense he was in Weeks 1 and 2.
Role
Starter at tight end. FantasyData and Rotowire showed him at about 63% of snaps (170) through Week 4, with Foster Moreau at about 41% (110), Cade Stover at about 26% (69) and Marlin Klein at about 8% (22). He had 52 of 79 snaps in Week 1. He caught 16 of 22 targets in Weeks 1 and 2, then drew only nine targets over Weeks 3 to 5, including 3 catches on 4 targets for 30 yards at Tennessee. Competition for the work is Moreau, Stover and Brevin Jordan at tight end, plus Collins and the receivers for targets. NBC Sports (Oct. 11) noted he was outgained by Stover and Jordan in one game.
He is the veteran starter and a reliable middle-of-the-field target for C.J. Stroud. Houston's receiver injuries (Jayden Higgins out for the season with a torn ACL, Tank Dell on IR to start the year) opened targets. He had 12 catches on 14 targets for 140 yards in Week 2 when Collins missed time, so volume can return if Collins or other receivers miss games. He also caught 82 passes on 106 targets last season.
With Collins back, the volume has gone away. He has caught three or fewer passes and stayed at or under 30 yards in three straight games, and he has no touchdowns this year. ESPN calls him a low-ceiling TE2 because Houston has depth at receiver, and Rotowire called him little more than a touchdown-or-bust option while Collins is healthy. ESPN also flagged a tough Week 6 matchup against Jacksonville.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement that he is a TE2-type option, with one open question: whether the Weeks 1 and 2 volume was a Collins-absence effect (the Rotowire and NBC read) or whether his role could rebound without a Collins injury. No source I found argues he will return to a TE1 role while Collins is healthy.
