Darnell Mooney

Consensus #282 · WR107Week 9: at PHI, 25th vs WRUpdated Oct 20

Mooney is a low-volume complementary receiver, mostly a slot and No. 3 option in the Giants' offense, and the neck injury that took him out of Sunday's game against the Saints puts even that role in question.

Role

Week 1 (CBS/Rotowire, Sep 14): 39 of 69 offensive snaps, 11 fewer than rookie Malachi Fields, and he was described as the primary slot receiver, with Odell Beckham as his likely competition for that job. Reported targets: 2 in Week 1, 3 in Week 2, 3 in Week 3, then 7 for 14 yards in Week 5 (NBC/Rotoworld, Oct 16). NBC has him tied with Fields for third on the team in targets, behind Isaiah Likely and Malik Nabers. A Giants page on ESPN, undated, says Charlie Jones would be the No. 3 receiver if Mooney is out. This has not been confirmed for this week. I did not read a current depth chart or a snap-share tracker for recent weeks.

The case for

He has a history of real production (992 yards in 2024, and a 12.3-yard career average depth of target per SI). He has an existing rapport with coordinator Matt Nagy from Chicago. He led Giants wideouts in camp targets and worked with the first team while Nabers recovered from a torn ACL. Seven targets in Week 5 suggests the volume can spike.

The case against

He has exactly two catches in each of his first three games as a Giant, and NBC says he is not seeing enough targets to be a weekly option. The offense is expected to be run-heavy with a lot of heavy personnel (Rotoballer, preseason). Targets also go to Nabers and Likely first, and Fields out-snapped him in Week 1. Seven targets turned into only 14 yards in Week 5.

Where analysts split

Whether his role is a real No. 2 or 3 receiver or a part-time slot role that Fields and Beckham can take. ESPN's preseason framing had him second or third in line for targets. NBC and the Week 1 snap data point to a smaller, inconsistent role.
