Darren Waller
Waller is a part-time, red-zone-leaning tight end in Carolina's offense, and his role looks smaller after a quiet Week 6.
Role
He played 36 of 79 offensive snaps (46%) against the Eagles, per the Panthers' own Week 6 snap counts. NBC Sports' initial reports have him running a route on 21 of 46 dropbacks. Earlier snap shares were 35% in Week 1 and 44% in Week 2, per FantasyData. Tommy Tremble is the block-first tight end he cedes early-down snaps to, per Rotowire's outlook, and Mitchell Evans is also in the room. Through Week 4 he had 13 catches on 19 targets for 148 yards and 2 TDs (Rotowire, Fox Sports). His target share has been well behind Tetairoa McMillan's, and the wide receiver injuries to Coker and Legette have moved his volume around. I did not read a current depth chart page.
He signed a one-year deal in August and has been a good fit with Bryce Young and Dave Canales' offense. ESPN noted he caught eight of nine red zone targets for eight touchdowns across 11 games with Miami and Carolina. Bryce Young's apparent trust in him there gives him a touchdown path even on modest snaps. His target share could rise when wide receivers are out, as it did in Weeks 3 and 4. He was also off the injury report with a full practice before Week 6, so health is not the issue.
Tremble caught all four of his targets for 46 yards and 2 TDs against the Eagles. Waller went without a catch on 2 targets, and Evans had one target. Draft Sharks says the Week 6 shift made him shakier and that his limited role already made him no more than a TE2-level option. Rotowire's outlook doubts he can pile up target volume while sharing snaps. Fox Sports reported Waller and Tremble (ribs) were both dealing with injuries after the Week 5 bye, and Waller's toe issue has since cleared. At 34 and under 50% of snaps, his production depends heavily on touchdowns.
Where analysts split
Whether Waller is a real target-earning piece or a touchdown-dependent part-timer. Earlier outlets, CBS among them, saw him as a low-end starter with a Week 4 spike coming. Rotowire and Draft Sharks point to Tremble and the snap split as caps on his volume. The Week 6 split (Tremble 4 targets, Waller 2) is the new evidence, and nobody has shown yet whether it persists.
