Adams is a lost-for-now veteran WR2 who is unlikely to play again before the Week 11 bye and could miss most or all of the 17-game season's remaining fantasy-relevant weeks.
Role
He has no role while out. Before the injury he was the clear No. 2 behind Puka Nacua, who has 37 catches for 417 yards and a touchdown (SI, Oct. 19). NBC Sports said he was still carrying red zone value, but his target rates were modest once Nacua returned in Week 4. Per NBC Sports, he is likely to go on injured reserve ahead of Week 7. That move has not been confirmed. The Rams' remaining receivers are Nacua, Konata Mumpfield, Jordan Whittington, Tutu Atwell, CJ Daniels and Alex Bachman (SI, AOL). No snap shares were found.
Adams hopes to return at the front end of the 6-10 week window, as close to the post-Week 11 bye as possible (ESPN's Jeremy Fowler via Forbes). He led the Rams in receiving yards through six weeks and was the only pass catcher with multiple touchdown catches (NFL.com). He was producing 30 catches for 480 yards and four touchdowns before the injury (GlobeTV). If he is healthy by the bye, he would be back for the stretch run with his red zone role intact.
He is 33 and the injury is a ruptured hamstring tendon that needs a procedure. A hamstring can set back or slow a player who has to accelerate and decelerate at game speed, and the upper end of 6-10 weeks leaves very little regular-season time (Football Nation). He also missed three games in each of the previous two seasons with hamstring problems (GlobeTV). Even before the injury, FTN noted he had just 148 receiving yards in the four games he played alongside Nacua. A return could bring a reduced role rather than his earlier production.
Where analysts split
Analysts agree on the timeline. What they disagree about is who benefits while he is out. Forbes and Football Nation expect Nacua to be the main volume beneficiary. FTN warns that his ceiling will not automatically rise, because defenses can focus on him and the Rams may shift work to tight ends and backs. NBC Sports expects Mumpfield to take a bigger role. Football Nation says Atwell, Whittington or others could earn larger shares. The Rams may also add a receiver by the Nov. 10 trade deadline (SI). Whether he returns at full effectiveness is a separate open question. Nobody has reported a firm return date.
