Boston is Cleveland's downfield rookie WR, and he has gone three straight quiet games despite a steady target volume.
Role
He is a starting outside receiver alongside Jerry Jeudy and fellow rookie KC Concepcion (Rotowire, depth chart note dated Sep 4). In Week 5 against the Jets he played 62 of 68 snaps (91.2%) and ran a team-high 41 routes (Draft Sharks summary). NBC Sports says he has drawn at least four targets in every game, and he had 8 in the Week 7 win over the Titans, third on the team. Concepcion led that game with 10 targets, 8 catches and 129 yards (Draft Sharks). Harold Fannin led the team in targets through Week 4 (18), with Concepcion at 17 and Boston at 15 (NBC Sports). The role is deep-ball heavy: NBC cited a 45 percent air yards share entering Week 7, and Rotowire lists his average depth of target at 15.6 yards through Week 2.
The volume is stable and the role is the deep one. He led Cleveland in receiving in three of the first four games (NBC Sports). He had big plays of 46, 55, 60 and 29 yards in Weeks 1, 2, 4 and 5. NBC says his Week 7 air yards were huge and that Watson nearly hit him on two long touchdowns. NBC expects big box scores to come.
His production has dropped and Concepcion is now taking the lead role. Boston went 1 for 5 for 15 yards in Week 6 after being blanketed in coverage, then 3 for 8 for 27 in Week 7. NBC called him a high-variance downfield option with three straight quiet outings. He also played through a foot injury that limited him in practice before Week 7. He has no designation now, but NBC suggested it could be affecting him. Fannin and Concepcion share the target pie.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement that he is a high-variance deep threat with a stable snap and target floor. What I did not find is any analyst arguing he is a safe, high-volume target earner. The open question is whether Concepcion's Week 7 breakout cuts into Boston's target share, and whether the recent dip is the foot injury, coverage or bad luck on deep balls.
