Team defense unit. As of Week 7, Rotoballer (checked Oct 27) has Detroit tied for first in the NFL in sacks with 21, and has held its last two opponents under 22 points, including 17 for Green Bay. Safety Brian Branch returned from his Achilles tear in the Packers game and had an interception. I did not find a current depth chart or snap counts. Week 8 is at home against Minnesota. Rotoballer has Detroit favored by 3 with a total near 46.5, and Minnesota's implied total is 24.75.
Rotoballer says the Lions have turned a corner. They rank tied for first in sacks, have held two straight opponents under 22 points, and are home favorites. Yahoo and Sportsnaut also say the unit is trending in a positive direction, and Branch is back in the secondary.
Minnesota's defense is first in EPA per play and points allowed, and Rotoballer calls the Vikings the hardest defense to rank this week. Their implied total against Detroit is the highest of any D/ST on that page. Yahoo says Detroit may have been bailed out by big drops from Green Bay receivers. Sportsnaut ranks Detroit's defense 23rd overall in its power rankings. A preseason Yahoo piece called the roster possibly worse than last year's, and the Lions' offense has lost fumbles that hurt field position.
Where analysts split
The question is whether the recent run is real, built on a sack-heavy pass rush and Branch's return, or just opponent luck. Week 8 ranks run from 12th (Rotoballer) to 13th by DraftSharks' ordinal, 15th (Sportsnaut) and 16th (SI). No analyst treats Detroit as a top-10 unit.
