DeVonta Smith
Smith is the clear WR1 in an Eagles offense that has lost four straight and will now run through backup Tanner McKee, so his volume looks secure even if the offense around him is struggling.
Role
He was the primary target in his first game back from injury. Yahoo's snap count piece (Oct. 19-20) says rookie Makai Lemon led the receivers in playing time. One tracker, unit219acbl, puts the Week 6 snaps at Lemon 52, Smith 42, Dontayvion Wicks 40, Darius Cooper 39 and Elijah Moore 8, and says Smith was managed on a pitch count while less than 100 percent healthy. I could not verify that health claim elsewhere. Smith saw 14 of McKee's 45 attempts, and TE Dallas Goedert (52 snaps, 81%) took 8 targets. Wicks, Lemon and Cooper were minor in the box score, with 2, 3 and 1 catches. Inside the Birds noted Marquise Brown was inactive and said the offense has little vertical threat besides Smith. A.J. Brown was traded to New England in the offseason.
With Brown gone, Smith has no other proven receiver to share targets with. SI's fantasy analysis argues McKee locked onto him and that his floor stays secure with a backup quarterback, with WR1 upside. Pre-season reporting (Inquirer, June) found he drew a 32% target share over the last two seasons when Brown was off the field. Without Brown, he has also been productive on a per-game basis (Yahoo, preseason).
The offense is struggling badly. McKee finished with a C- grade, the Eagles managed 222 total yards and 35 rushing yards, and they had a key third-down miscommunication with Smith. Hurts is on injured reserve with a blood clot, and an SI piece says he is out for the season. I could not confirm that timeline in a second source. Smith may have been on a pitch count, and the same SI piece warns that 14 targets is a small sample likely to regress. The preseason view (PhillyVoice, June) was that new coordinator Sean Mannion's West Coast-style offense could spread targets rather than feed one receiver.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether the 14-target game is the new normal or a one-off. Optimists see McKee-to-Smith chemistry and no competing alpha. The cautious view is that a weak offense, a possible snap limit and a spread-the-ball scheme cap his volume. Lemon's higher snap count is a second thing to watch. I found no analyst who disputes that Smith is the lead option.
