Bass is Buffalo's healthy, undisputed starting kicker, and he has made every field goal he has tried this season; his volume is modest.
Role
He is the Bills' full-time placekicker and handles field goals, PATs and kickoffs. I found no report of competition for the job. PFF's player page (indexed, not checked on a live date) shows 6 of 6 on field goals and 13 of 14 on PATs for 2026, with 0 attempts from 50-plus. ESPN's page shows a long of 49 and 88.2% on PATs. Those pages predate the latest game, because the wire note has him 2-for-2 on field goals and 2-for-2 on PATs against the Patriots. Treat the season totals as approximate. I did not find a snap count or any per-game attempt trend.
Optimists point to a strong offense that keeps getting him into scoring range, and to his clean field-goal record this year. Buffalo's games are close and high-scoring: Bills 37, Rams 34 in overtime, and the 29-26 loss to the Patriots. A Bills highlight page shows him hitting a 49-yarder and the 45-yard overtime winner against the Rams. He is also healthy after missing all of last season to hip and groin trouble, which was later revealed to be a sports hernia, according to SI.
Skeptics would say six field-goal attempts through the Week 4 stats is a low volume, and a perfect record on so few kicks proves little. His career field-goal rate is about 85%, and PFF graded him 20th of 32 kickers (63.8). He has also missed a PAT this season. His 2023 struggles included a missed game-tying kick in the divisional round, per SI. He missed the entire 2025 season, and Matt Prater, a 41-year-old, kicked well in his place.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement. I found no analyst split on his role or job security. The only open question is how many attempts the Bills' scoring pace will give him, and I found no analysis of it.
