Emeka Egbuka

Consensus #36 · WR18Week 2: vs CLE, 20th vs WRUpdated Sep 4

Tampa's primary young perimeter/slot target coming off a productive rookie campaign (roughly 63-938-6 per ESPN's player page), but he is currently working through a lingering toe issue that has cost him practice time.

Role

Full-time No. 1 receiver usage when healthy — high snap share, moves between slot and outside, and the most consistently targeted pass-catcher in the Buccaneers' receiver room. Competition for the remaining volume comes from Chris Godwin (still Baker Mayfield's preferred short/intermediate option when on the field), Jalen McMillan and Tez Johnson, plus the tight end and Tampa's heavy backfield passing usage. Snap counts are the number to check first if he plays through the toe — a maintenance role would show up as reduced snaps rather than a full sit.

The case for

He has already proven he can carry a No. 1 target load with a stable, aggressive passing offense around him; the toe is soft-tissue-adjacent rather than structural, he has been running on the side field without visible problems, and Tampa has repeatedly kept its lead receiver on the field once cleared. With Godwin's own durability shaky, Egbuka is the target funnel.

The case against

This is a toe problem that has already cost him a lot of practice time rather than a one-off tweak, and toe/foot injuries chew into the exact things that make him productive — release quickness, route breaks, and downfield separation. A 'plays but limited' outcome, or a game-day scratch after a Saturday setback, is live, and Tampa has enough alternate targets to spread the ball if he can't go full speed.

Where analysts split

Not whether he is the No. 1 receiver — that's broad agreement — but whether the toe lets him play a normal snap count. One camp reads the side-field running and day-to-day language as a routine designation; the other notes he has missed extended practice time and expects either a scratch or a throttled, low-efficiency workload.
