Boutte is a boom-or-bust deep threat competing for Houston's WR2 role behind Nico Collins, valuable mainly for touchdown/big-play spikes rather than weekly volume.
Role
Boutte was acquired from New England on Aug. 24 to fill a WR2-type role opened up by Jayden Higgins' ACL injury, working primarily as an outside field-stretcher in two-receiver sets alongside Nico Collins. He's competing with Jaylin Noel (and to a lesser extent Xavier Hutchinson) for snaps and targets behind Collins, and reports describe him as still building chemistry with C.J. Stroud rather than a locked-in every-down piece. In New England last season he played roughly two-thirds of offensive snaps when active but saw a modest target share (around 10-12%), so a similar 'plays a lot, targeted less' pattern is plausible in Houston.
He was a downfield weapon last year with a very high average depth of target and elite yards-per-target, giving him spike-week upside via deep balls and touchdowns even on modest target volume, and he has the clearest path among Houston's non-Collins receivers to a true No. 2 outside role.
His career target share has never topped roughly 12%, he's finished as a fringe-fantasy-relevant receiver in each of his first two NFL seasons, and he's a new arrival still learning Houston's offense and building rapport with Stroud, which could cap his usage even if he wins the WR2 job on paper.
