Keenan Allen
Keenan Allen is a short-area, chain-moving target who has led or nearly led the Colts in targets since Alec Pierce went down, on a part-time snap count. His volume depends on Pierce's injury and on game script.
Role
Allen is a slot and short-area receiver. He played 32 of 71 snaps in Week 5 and ran a route on 28 of 47 dropbacks (NBC Sports/Rotoworld). He played just 30 snaps in Week 7 against Minnesota, when he went 3-for-3 for 31 yards. He has had at least nine targets in three games this year: 9 in Week 3, 9 in Week 5 and 11 in Week 6. Week 1 vs. Baltimore was a fuller day (36 of 54 snaps). Competition is Tyler Warren (TE) and Josh Downs. Pierce (heel) was on IR as of the Week 4-5 reports and I did not confirm his current status. Laquon Treadwell and Ashton Dulin took heavy snaps in Week 4.
Allen has been the top or near-top target for Daniel Jones while Pierce is out. NBC Sports/Rotoworld called him the WR1 in the Week 7 note. He set season highs in Week 6 (8 catches, 11 targets, 82 yards) with Warren inactive. One Week 8 waiver column (The Big Lead) pointed to 29 targets over the three games before Week 7 and ranked him WR23 as a PPR flex. He is a quick outlet against pressure.
His snaps are capped, at 30 in Week 7 and under half in Week 5. His targets are short, and he averaged 8.1 yards per reception through Week 5, which Fox Sports flagged as on pace for a career low. Week 7 volume was only three targets while Jones threw for 108 yards under constant pressure. Establish the Run's preseason view was that he would settle into a part-time role once Pierce was healthy, and he is 34. The Week 5 note said the heavy volume came partly because the Steelers' focus on stopping Jonathan Taylor forced the Colts to throw nearly 50 times.
Where analysts split
Whether his target volume holds. One side treats him as the offense's top target with Pierce out. The other expects a part-time, low-yardage role that shrinks when Pierce returns, when Warren is healthy, or when the game script is not pass-heavy. CBS/Rotowire's Week 6 note called him the No. 3 option behind Warren and Downs, while NBC Sports/Rotoworld calls him WR1.
