Khalil Shakir
Shakir is Josh Allen's short-area, high-catch-rate slot receiver, and the Bills' passing game now has more mouths to feed than it did last year.
Role
Reporting describes a short-area role. NBC Sports/Rotoworld (Sept. 18) said he works the short areas and also takes snaps out of the backfield. RotoWire says fewer than a quarter of his snaps come on the perimeter. Razzball's preseason projection had him as a starter at about 75% of snaps and 18 to 19% of targets, but I did not see a current in-season snap share. ESPN's page, about six days old, says he turned eight targets into seven catches for 82 yards against the Patriots, after 8-94-0 on 15 targets in the first three games. That works out to 15 catches, 176 yards and 23 targets through the Patriots game. The Rams game came after that, so his season totals are higher. D.J. Moore, tight end Dalton Kincaid, and Keon Coleman and Joshua Palmer compete for targets. The Moore and Kincaid competition comes from CBS and ESPN. I did not find a confirmed current depth chart.
He is a reliable target for Allen. ESPN notes he has cleared a 20% target share and 70 catches in consecutive seasons, and ranks top five among receivers in catch rate and yards after the catch. Coach Joe Brady said at the Combine that Shakir can play inside and outside. ESPN's Alaina Getzenberg expected a bigger role. The last two games (7 catches for 82 yards, then 3 for 3 for 80 in the Rams win) show the volume can arrive in bursts.
Targets are now shared. CBS and Fox both say Moore's arrival and a healthy Kincaid mean more competition and a low ceiling. ESPN says he now has to compete with Moore for the team lead in targets. Fox called his role complementary after Week 2, and NBC described it as gadgety. ESPN also notes he rarely gets goal-line looks. RotoWire says nearly all of last year's targets came from 11 personnel. Three targets against the Rams suggests his volume can drop sharply in a given game.
Where analysts split
The split is over how many targets he keeps now that Moore and Kincaid are healthy. Preseason coverage (Getzenberg, Brady) expected a bigger, more varied role. CBS, ESPN and Fox expect the competition to cap his volume and ceiling. Early results are mixed: 6, 6, 3 and 8 targets in four games, plus 3 against the Rams.
