Konata Mumpfield

Consensus #258 · WR102Week 9: at WAS, 27th vs WRUpdated Oct 27

Mumpfield is a rotational WR2/WR3 whose snaps are decent but whose targets are thin, and his role depends heavily on Puka Nacua's health and Davante Adams' absence.

Role

Turf Show Times' snap counts for the 35-21 win at Las Vegas have Nacua at 65 snaps (81%), Mumpfield at 31 (43%), Tutu Atwell at 25 (31%) and Jordan Whittington at 15 (21%). When Nacua missed Weeks 2 and 3, Mumpfield played about 70% of snaps (ESPN, CBS/RotoWire). Since Nacua returned, his targets have been 3, 3 and 2 in the three games ESPN lists after Denver. He has 3 targets or fewer in each of his last four games. He also has 8 targets in the Denver game and has been the clear beneficiary of Nacua absences. FantasyPros noted tight ends and backs are heavily involved in the Rams' passing game. ESPN's player page, written before the Las Vegas game, says Adams is out a minimum of four games. I did not confirm Adams' current status beyond that.

The case for

Optimists point to the 4-for-8, 93-yard, one-touchdown game against Denver when Nacua was out. His snap share sits near 70% when he is a starter. FantasyPros cites a 66.7% route share and 1.69 yards per route run in his two starts. With Adams out at least four games per ESPN, he remains a regular wideout in Stafford's offense and gets a bump whenever Nacua sits.

The case against

Skeptics note the snaps have not turned into targets: 3 targets or fewer in each of his last four games, and an 11.6% target share even as a starter (FantasyPros). Turf Show Times puts his catch rate over 24 games at 45% (19 catches on 42 targets). Fewer snaps (43%) when Nacua plays, plus Atwell sharing the work, and a passing game that leans on tight ends and backs, leave little room for him.

Where analysts split

Whether he is a real second option or just a snap-filler: the usage-based view says his routes and snaps will become targets, while the results-based view says Stafford does not look his way and the targets go to Nacua and the tight ends. The Turf Show Times piece says the Rams still lack a viable WR2, so the job is open but unclaimed.
