Kyle Williams

Consensus #254 · WR98Week 9: vs GB, 23rd vs WRUpdated Oct 20

Williams is a rotational, big-play-dependent receiver and the primary kickoff returner. Sunday's 3-for-3, 91-yard, one-touchdown game against the Raiders is the best sign yet, but the reporting I found doesn't show a lasting role change.

Role

Early-season reporting has him as a package player. PatsPulpit's Week 2 snap count (about 27 days old) had him on 11 of 55 offensive snaps (20%), behind Romeo Doubs (67%) and DeMario Douglas (47%). The Athletic's Chad Graff, quoted by NBC Sports, said he played 12 snaps in the opener and was "buried on the depth chart." A PatsPulpit piece from about 12 days ago counted 7 targets on 64 offensive snaps and 11 kick returns averaging 24.8 yards. A.J. Brown was injured in the opener (high-ankle sprain) and was reportedly expected to miss five more games after Week 2. I did not find his current status or Williams' snap count against the Raiders, so I can't say how much of Sunday's production came from added snaps.

The case for

He is a speedster who looked good in preseason and has real big-play history. All three of his 2025 touchdowns went for 30-plus yards. He is targeted at a modest but steady rate for his snaps, and PatsPulpit said he is on pace to pass his 21 targets from last season. Brown's injury opened outside snaps. Graff argued that getting him more involved would help New England's explosive plays. Sunday's 3-for-3 for 91 yards and a touchdown fits that argument.

The case against

The snap share has been small, and the targets have not turned into catches or yards. Graff cited his unrefined route running from camp. Coach Mike Vrabel's remarks, as PatsPulpit reported them, were mostly about kick-return help and a misthrown ball rather than a bigger offensive role. Last season he was targeted on only 12.4% of his routes (per RotoWire), and his scoring came on a few long plays. Douglas and Doubs hold the slot and outside jobs ahead of him, and Brown's return would push him back down.

Where analysts split

The question is whether Williams earns steady offensive snaps or stays a few-snaps deep threat. Graff's view and the Week 2 snap data say the depth chart hasn't moved. The optimists point to his speed and the Brown injury. I did not find analysts debating Sunday's game specifically.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
