Matthew Golden
Golden has moved from a part-time rookie to a full-time starting receiver and one of Jordan Love's main targets, sharing the top role with Christian Watson.
Role
Reports put him at 83% of offensive snaps through the first three games (DraftKings Network, Sept. 29), up from 53% last season, with Watson at 82%. RotoWire's snap table dated Oct. 4 lists 85% for its top entry, but the page text doesn't say which player that is. Golden has drawn 12, 6, 12, and 13 targets in the games I found. FantasyData says he has had at least seven targets in three straight games, and it describes his role as being alongside Watson. Jordan Love has called him the X receiver. Doubs left in free agency and Wicks was traded, which thinned the room. I did not find a current depth chart or a snap report for Jayden Reed this season, so I can't say how much Reed cuts into the work.
The second-year breakout looks real. FantasyData has him at 24 catches, 397 yards and two touchdowns through five games, ranked WR11 at that point. PFF grades him 19th of 71 qualified WRs and 9th in targets. The Packers lost two veteran receivers in the offseason, he has had two 100-yard games (including Sunday's 104 yards and a touchdown), and he is a deep threat who ran a 4.29 at the combine.
His efficiency is uneven. He caught 15 of his first 30 targets, and Sunday was six of 13. PFF charged him with 4 drops. His volume has partly come from game script: several of his heavy-target games were losses, including 12 targets against the Vikings and 12 against the Falcons. The offense also leans on Watson, who ranks above him, and a healthy Reed could cut into his share. Last year his usage collapsed once the receiver room got healthy.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement that the role is real. The only open question I found is whether his volume and deep-ball production hold up once catch rate and game script even out. I found no analyst explicitly arguing against the role.
