Michael Mayer

Consensus #220 · TE33Week 9: at SF, 14th vs TEUpdated Oct 20

Mayer is Brock Bowers' backup, a short-area tight end whose fantasy value depends on how many targets the offense sends him and on whether Bowers is healthy.

Role

Coverage describes him as the No. 2 tight end behind Bowers whenever Bowers is active. In Weeks 1 and 2, with Bowers out (knee), Mayer was TE1 and posted 9 catches on 11 targets for 55 yards (RotoWire via CBS and Fox, September). That included a team-high 7 targets in Week 1, in a mostly short-area role. Bowers returned in Week 3 and Mayer went back to No. 2, catching 3 of 3 targets for 32 yards and a touchdown. Raider Ramble (Oct. 17) reported that he played a season-low 39 offensive snaps, 65% of the team's total, in the loss to New England, with a season-low one target. The wire note has him at 7 of 9 targets for 95 yards against Buffalo. I did not find Bowers' current status or this week's snap count, so I can't say whether that game was a Bowers absence or a real role increase.

The case for

Optimists point to the 7-of-9, 95-yard game and to the Week 1 and 2 production as proof he can be a viable starting tight end whenever the offense needs him. NBC Sports (Oct. 4) also cited a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter that his role was expected to grow with Bowers out. He also has a new contract extension, first-year coach Klint Kubiak's offense, and a safety-net profile for quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has targeted him in the red zone.

The case against

Skeptics say the Raiders can't feed two tight ends, a point NBC Sports made about last season, and that Bowers is the top pass-catcher on a team without a bona fide No. 1 receiver. His average depth of target is only 4.5 yards (PFF), and he had 6.1 yards per reception through his first two games. Raider Ramble (Oct. 17) says he lacks a real role and has not topped five targets outside Weeks 1 and 2, though its target counts don't match RotoWire's. Athlon (3 days old) also frames the extension as puzzling and notes he is asked to block regularly.

Where analysts split

The disagreement is whether Mayer has a standalone passing role with Bowers healthy, or whether his targets only come when Bowers is absent or the game script forces extra volume. The Buffalo game is the latest evidence for the first view, but I couldn't confirm Bowers' availability or Mayer's snaps in it.
