Michael Pittman Jr.
Pittman is a sidelined, underperforming addition to the Steelers receiver room, and his season now depends on how his left foot heals after the setback.
Role
He has no current role because he is on IR. Before the injury he had 7 catches on 12 targets for 89 yards in three games (ESPN). Reporting says Roman Wilson and rookie Germie Bernard get more snaps while he is out, with DK Metcalf also in the room. I found no snap-share or target-share figures. For the Week 7 game against New Orleans, Pittsburgh elevated practice-squad receivers Brandon Smith and Brandon Johnson (Athlon). I did not read a depth chart.
The Steelers traded for him in March and gave him a three-year, $59 million extension. ESPN describes him as productive and versatile in six seasons with the Colts, with two 1,000-yard seasons. His slow start could be attributed to injuries, since he missed a large chunk of training camp and Week 2. If the foot heals, he is a 6-foot-4 outside target and a key piece of the receiver room.
The foot problem is plantar fasciitis in his left foot, which tends to linger. He aggravated it in practice and was seen on a scooter. He missed most of camp with a separate injury and has barely produced for Pittsburgh. Fox Sports noted that the Steelers haven't gotten what they expected from him. Even on schedule he could not return before Week 10, and a further setback would cost more time.
Where analysts split
Broad agreement on the short term: he is out at least four games, and Wilson and Bernard benefit. I found no analyst split. The open question is how well his foot responds after the first aggravation, and nobody I found has reported a return timeline beyond the minimum.
Injury: IR: assessed avoid
Foot injury (originally plantar fasciitis, now something else), no clear return timeline
Pittman is on IR with no practice participation and no clear timetable; he's merely running again, which is far from a return to practice or games, so he is not startable for the foreseeable future.
What would change this: Reports of him resuming practice with the team or a specific target date for activation.
Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
