Oronde Gadsden

Consensus #160 · TE22Week 9: vs HOU, 5th vs TEUpdated Oct 20

Gadsden is the Chargers' most-targeted tight end in a split room, not the clear every-down TE1 that the Week 3 injuries seemed to promise.

Role

Kolar's forearm injury looked serious in September, but Rotoworld (via NBC Sports) has him back by Week 6. In that loss to the Chiefs, Kolar ran 28 routes and Gadsden ran 24. Both saw five targets from Herbert, and Gadsden caught 3 for 17 yards. NBC noted Gadsden played 39 of 69 snaps, more than any other tight end, and ran a route on 31 of 43 dropbacks. In his one week as sole TE1 (Week 3 at Buffalo), BoltBeat had him at 56.5% of snaps with no catches on three targets. The wire note has him at 5 catches on 8 targets for 36 yards in Seattle, plus a two-yard carry. Njoku (fibula) was expected to go on IR in September. I did not find a current report on his status or return, or on how the Seattle snaps were split.

The case for

He is the only tight end in the room with proven pass-game production. He had 49 catches on 69 targets for 664 yards as a rookie. The Week 7 line of 8 targets is his highest in the reporting I found. NBC's Week 6 note says he led the tight ends in snaps and routes. McDaniel and Harbaugh both said they were confident in a bigger role, and The Athletic's Popper said McDaniel would use him in a way that maximizes his receiving skills. The offense is also short of dynamic pass catchers, with McConkey dealing with a rib injury.

The case against

The role has been shared and the results have been weak. Rotoworld's Denny Carter called both Gadsden and Kolar unplayable outside the deepest formats because of how the tight end targets are divided. NBC said the Chargers look discombobulated on offense, and the team has lost four straight. Gadsden opened the season as TE3 on the first unofficial depth chart. BoltBeat flagged his blocking as a deficit and questioned his role once the room is healthy. He had just 10 snaps in Week 1, and he logged one preseason snap with Herbert on the field.

Where analysts split

The question is whether Gadsden holds the lead pass-catching tight end job now that Kolar is back, or whether the work stays split. Kolar was the blocker-first tight end early in the season, yet he ran more routes than Gadsden in Week 6. Opinion on that is mixed. Waiver-week analysts projected 70 to 80% of snaps when both others were out, while Rotoworld has since said the split makes both tight ends unplayable. I did not find coverage written after the Seattle game.
