Tank Dell
A stash, not a starter: Dell opens 2026 on IR-designated-to-return after missing all of 2025 with a catastrophic knee injury, and he cannot play until Week 5 at the earliest (Oct. 11 vs. Tennessee).
Role
No role for the first four games — he is not on the 53 and is ineligible. The Texans kept five receivers without him, headed by Nico Collins as the clear alpha, with the 2025 rookie class (Jayden Higgins, Jaylin Noel) plus Xavier Hutchinson having had a full year of runway while Dell rehabbed. When he is activated, the realistic path is slot/short-area and gadget work built up gradually rather than an immediate full-time snap share; he also has punt-return history. The honest answer is that nobody, including the staff, has stated a target-share expectation for him yet.
He was a genuinely productive NFL receiver before the injury — 709 yards and seven TDs as a rookie, then 667 yards on 81 targets in 10-plus games in 2024, finishing inside the top 20 in receiver fantasy scoring at the time he went down. He was cleared off PUP in July, practiced in training camp, and C.J. Stroud has an established rapport with him. The IR stint is explicitly framed by reporters as giving him time to get acclimated, not as a setback, and if he looks like his old self by midseason he is a talented target-earner on a team that needs a second option behind Collins.
This was not a clean ACL: torn ACL, MCL and LCL, a dislocated kneecap and meniscus damage, requiring multiple surgeries and costing him an entire season. He missed the last stretch of camp practices, played in none of the three preseason games, and was limited largely to individual drills — hence the IR placement. Dell's game was built on burst and separation, exactly what a multi-ligament knee reconstruction threatens, and he has played only 25 games in three pro seasons. Meanwhile Houston invested premium picks in receivers who have been on the field while he hasn't, so even a healthy Dell may return to a smaller role than he left.
Where analysts split
Not whether he plays — it's whether the four-week IR stint is purely precautionary acclimation (the framing from Texans beat reporters) or a sign he is still meaningfully behind physically, and, separately, whether a returning Dell reclaims a starting perimeter/slot job or slots in behind Higgins and Noel in the pecking order.
