Tez Johnson

Consensus #243 · WR89Week 9: at CHI, 17th vs WRUpdated Oct 20

Tez Johnson is a situational deep-ball receiver behind Emeka Egbuka, Chris Godwin and rookie Ted Hurst, and the most recent reporting shows his snaps slipping rather than growing.

Role

He is the No. 4 receiver by recent usage. Yahoo's Week 6 snap table (checked today) has him at 25 snaps, 34%, against the Steelers. Yahoo says Hurst played 37 snaps to Johnson's 25 in Week 6, widening a 33-28 edge from Week 5. The Buccaneers' site had Johnson at 35 snaps in Week 4 and 28 in Week 5. NBC Sports (Oct. 8) described a situational role and said he runs a route on less than a third of dropbacks. He also shares punt return duty with Kameron Johnson on the club's Week 3 depth chart. I did not fetch the live depth chart or a target tracker, so I have no current target share.

The case for

His production comes in big plays. NBC Sports noted that two of his five catches this season account for 113 yards, including the 64-yarder against Dallas in Week 5. The club said that play set up a Bucky Irving touchdown run. His snaps rose in Weeks 4 and 5 (35, then 28), and he has a return job. Any injury ahead of him would open a role, but no such injury has been reported.

The case against

The workload is too thin to count on. He saw one target against Dallas, and NBC Sports advised leaving him on waivers because he runs a route on less than a third of dropbacks. Hurst has now passed him in snaps, and Egbuka and Godwin lead the group. Yahoo's snap table has Johnson at 34% in Week 6, below the 35 and 28 snaps of the two games before it.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement that he is a part-time, big-play-dependent receiver. The one open question is whether the Week 4 and 5 snap bump (35, 28) was a real expansion or noise now that Hurst is pulling ahead. No analyst I found argues for a larger role.
