Theo Johnson

Consensus #278 · TE39Week 9: at PHI, 2nd vs TEOutUpdated Oct 20

Johnson is a pass-catching tight end whose role has shrunk this season, and he is out with a neck injury, so his next game is the first question.

Role

Rotowire's player page (read 20 October) lists him with 9 targets, 4 catches, 55 yards and 1 TD this season. That includes four targets with no catches in Week 2 and a lone 11-yard TD target in the Week 5 win over the Cardinals. Rotowire says the Giants signed Isaiah Likely, who is expected to take most of the pass-catching work at tight end. Rotowire also notes Manhertz as the blocking-oriented tight end. I found no snap share, route rate or depth chart reading for this season, so I can't give those figures.

The case for

Johnson is a 6-foot-6 tight end with a red-zone profile, and he has said he expected more option routes and third-down work in this offense. If Likely does not take over as expected, or he gets hurt, Johnson is still a capable receiving tight end on the roster.

The case against

Rotowire expects Likely to take over the receiving role, and Johnson's own target count this season is small (9). He is now out with a neck injury after being limited in practice on October 14. A tight end who is losing targets and missing game time has little room for error.

Where analysts split

broad agreement

Injury: Out: assessed real

Neck injury, questionable

Neck designations warrant caution, and the expected return date of Nov. 8 suggests he is likely to miss time beyond this week's game.

What would change this: Official practice status and any update on whether he plays or is ruled out for the upcoming game.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
