Cutter Gauthier

Consensus #39 · LW9 · tier 6Week 5: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Gauthier is a shoot-first winger on Anaheim's first power-play unit, and his even-strength line has changed several times in the past week, so it is not settled.

Role

In warmup lines for the Nov 1 game against Ottawa (Derek Lee via NHL Game Day Lines), he skated left wing on the second line with Mikael Granlund and Beckett Sennecke. Alex Killorn, Leo Carlsson and Judd Caulfield made up the top line. The Nov 1 projected lines at Inside the Rink match that. He is on the first power-play unit in the sources I read, alongside Carlsson, Granlund, Sennecke and defenseman Jackson LaCombe. FSRoundup's page, indexed about 28 days ago, says he was promoted to PP1 on Oct 16. Inside the Rink has him at 22:18 of ice time in his last outing, but I have not confirmed which game that was. Practice and game lines on Oct 26 and 27 had him on the top line with Carlsson and Caulfield. By Oct 28 and 29 he was on a line with Tim Washe and A.J. Greer. I did not fetch Daily Faceoff's live page, so I am not reporting what it lists today. The wire note says he is day-to-day, and I found no practice report dated after it.

The case for

The underlying numbers back the volume. Inside the Rink, citing Box Score Junkie, has him at 54.1% Corsi-for and 65.6 shot attempts for per 60. It also lists him with four goals on 5.5 expected, so the finishing should follow. He had 10 shots and two goals in his last outing. He has a secure PP1 spot and has been bumped to the top line before. His 22:18 in that outing shows he gets heavy minutes.

The case against

His even-strength linemates keep changing: top line, then a Washe/Greer line, then Granlund and Sennecke on the second line. The Oct 29 game-log showed that Washe/Greer trio getting outshot badly in limited minutes. Anaheim was 5-7-1 in October, per Silver Seven Sens. The day-to-day wire note adds some risk to his availability.

Where analysts split

The open question is whether he settles on the second line with Granlund and Sennecke or returns to the top line with Carlsson. Practice lines on Oct 26 and 27 had him with Carlsson, and the Oct 31 and Nov 1 lines have Killorn there. I found no analyst piece arguing either side, only lineup reports. His PP1 role looks stable across the sources I read.
