Matt Boldy

Consensus #16 · LW4 · tier 4Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Matt Boldy is a first-line right wing on the top power-play unit, so for the rest of this season he is a core scoring option on the Wild's best offensive group.

Role

Daily Faceoff's line page, fetched 26 October (last updated that day, sourced from the 25 October game at Vancouver), lists him on the top line at right wing with Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek. The same page puts him on the first power-play unit with Maxim Shabanov, Eriksson Ek, Kaprizov and Quinn Hughes. Second power play is Blake Coleman, Ryan Hartman, Danila Yurov, Bobby Brink and Jared Spurgeon. Inside the Rink's projected lines for 22 and 24 October had him on the second penalty-kill unit with Eriksson Ek. Daily Faceoff's current page does not list him on either penalty-kill unit, so his penalty-kill role is unsettled. I found no reported ice-time figures this season. The 5v5 Hockey page (as of 20 October) showed him with 5 goals and 2 assists in 9 games. He has no injury designation.

The case for

He is on the top line and the top power-play unit with Kaprizov and Eriksson Ek, which is the best usage the roster offers. Last season he scored 11 points and took 59 shots in 13 games, which points to a high-volume shooter. A Hockey Wilderness piece (published roughly 69 days before today) argued the Kaprizov-Boldy pairing is a balanced attack. It called them elite puck handlers who can both finish and drag defenses toward them.

The case against

The line has not been stable all year. A 24 October beat-writer post (via NHL Game Day Lines) had Coleman, Eriksson Ek and Boldy together. Early-October posts from the same feed, including one lamenting that Boldy and Eriksson Ek needed to get going, show the group has been adjusted. Kaprizov, Eriksson Ek and Boldy are the common thread across the Oct 25-26 sources, but Shabanov and Hughes share the first power play, so Boldy's power-play share depends on one unit staying intact. Last season he played only 13 games, so his sample is small. I found no source that says why.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role. The one open question is whether the Kaprizov-Eriksson Ek-Boldy trio stays together at five-on-five, or whether coaches split Boldy off to the second line again, as some beat-writer posts from earlier in the year show. I did not find analysts arguing that point in current coverage.
