Fabian Zetterlund

Consensus #281 · LW49 · tier 9Week 5: 2 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Zetterlund opens November as Ottawa's top-line left wing next to Tim Stützle, with second-unit power-play time, but the spot has changed several times this season and I found no analyst commentary on whether he keeps it.

Role

Daily Faceoff's Senators line page (fetched 2 November, last updated 1 November) lists him at LW in the first forward slot beside Stützle and Dylan Cozens, and on the second power-play unit with Ridly Greig, Shane Pinto, Claude Giroux and Thomas Chabot. Inside the Rink's 1 November Anaheim preview shows the same line and the same PP2. His 1 November linemates, Stützle and Cozens, are not the same as the Stützle-Giroux pairing in a 28 October SensChirp listing and an earlier ShipItNation listing, so who skates with him has changed. I did not find a current ice time figure for him. Other sources show earlier looks this season: 5v5 Hockey on 12 October had him on the third line with Greig and Cozens, and a Dobber Frozen Pool page for the 17 October Philadelphia game showed him with Warren Foegele and Greig. William Eklund, Burakovsky and Foegele are on the injured list per ESPN's line page, which may be why the top-six wings look different from earlier in the month. Philip Tomasino, Drake Batherson and Claude Giroux are the wings around him in the current lines. I found no official club statement on the lines.

The case for

He is on the top line with Stützle and on a power-play unit, and that is the best slot available to a Senators left wing. Last season he took 35 shots on goal in 16 games, which fits a shooter getting top-line volume. Four of the sources I read, which show Eklund and Zetterlund together in earlier practice lines, point to existing chemistry with Eklund, who is currently injured. This is my reading of the lines rather than a quote from any analyst.

The case against

His spot has moved around, from the third line on 12 October to the first line now. Eklund and others are hurt, so it could be a placement forced by injuries that reverses when they return. He is only on PP2, behind a first unit of Batherson, Halliday, Cozens, Stützle and Sanderson. A Hockey Writers piece from about 188 days ago argued the top line did not work with him last season, with one goal and 18 shots in about 25 minutes, and that he had not held a lineup spot. That piece is stale. Last season he had 1 goal and 6 points in 16 games, and 1 power-play point.
