Jason Zucker
Zucker is a 34-year-old bottom-six winger coming back from offseason abdomen surgery. Current reporting points to third-line work with some second-unit power-play time, and his usage in this return is not settled.
Role
The wire note has him practicing on the third line Monday. Game-preview lineups from Yahoo/The Hockey News (Oct. 29 and 31) and Inside the Rink (Oct. 31) show Zucker on the third line with Josh Norris and Ryan McLeod. Inside the Rink lists him on the second power-play unit with McLeod, Josh Doan, Owen Power and Norris. An ESPN line page (indexed 12 days ago, not fetched) had him on the first line with Norris and Tage Thompson and on PP2 with Konsta Helenius and Doan. I did not read any live line page, so treat all of this as unconfirmed for the Flyers game. Ice time for this season is unknown. One Morning Puck snippet, 21 days old, showed 12:04 for a Zucker game, but I could not tell which game it was. The PP1 group in those previews is Benson, Ostlund, Quinn, Thompson and Dahlin. Competition for his spot comes from Doan, Helenius, Krebs and Benson, whose slots keep moving.
Sabrenoise notes he scored 24 goals last season and argues his return could lift both the power play and the bottom six. Buffalo's power play was 32nd at 9.8% as of Oct. 29. Reports have him on PP2, and he has had a shooter's role before. Our data shows he had 10 shots on goal in only 5 games last season.
He is coming off surgery and has missed the start of the year. He is 34, and the latest lineups use him on the third line. The first power-play unit is held by younger players. Sabrenoise says the team needs help in the bottom six, which implies he is a support piece and not a driver. He had only 5 games last season (1 goal, 1 point), so there is little recent sample to lean on.
Where analysts split
The open question is whether Zucker stays on the third line with Norris and McLeod and on PP2, or moves up to the top line with Norris and Thompson as the ESPN page showed. Sources also disagree on who plays his line's other slots. The Oct. 29 lineup had Thompson with Benson and Helenius on line 1, while the Oct. 31 lineups had Krebs on line 1. I found no beat-writer or Athletic commentary arguing either side.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
