Jesper Bratt

Consensus #73 · LW15 · tier 8Week 5: 4 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Bratt is a second-line winger who plays on the first power-play unit, and the coverage I found shows no dispute about that role.

Role

Daily Faceoff's Devils page (fetched today, last updated Oct 30) lists Bratt on the second line with Arseny Gritsyuk and Jack Hughes. Timo Meier, Nico Hischier and Luke Evangelista are the first line. The same page puts him on the first power-play unit with Hischier, Evangelista, Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes. Meier, Evan Rodrigues, Anthony Mantha, Gritsyuk and Dougie Hamilton are the second unit. Bratt is not listed on either penalty-kill unit. ESPN's Devils line page (indexed 11 days ago) shows the same line and power-play setup. The Devils' game preview on Inside the Rink for Oct 27 projected him on the top line with Gritsyuk and Hughes. I did not find a reported ice-time figure for this season. One aggregator, Lineups.com, shows 21.4 TOI for Bratt, but its page was indexed 102 days ago, so I am not treating that figure as current. The two Hughes players and Hischier are the ones sharing his power-play unit, and Gritsyuk is the main one competing for the top-six wing work.

The case for

Bratt has the best underlying numbers on the team. Inside the Rink on Oct 30, citing Box Score Junkie, had him at 68.2% Corsi-for and 82.1 shot attempts for per 60, both team bests. It also had him at two goals on 3.6 expected, so the finishing should catch up. He also sits on the top power-play unit and plays with Jack Hughes at even strength. An aggregator, Ferda Hockey, noted 18 points in the last five games for the Bratt, Hughes and Gritsyuk line as of the Oct 30 game, though I could not verify that figure independently.

The case against

He is on the second line behind the Meier, Hischier and Evangelista trio in the order Daily Faceoff and ESPN show. The top power-play unit has five players who all have strong claims on it, so his share of the power-play time depends on that unit staying as it is. His goal total is low relative to chances (two goals on 3.6 expected, per Inside the Rink). He played 14 games last season (2 G, 10 A, 12 PTS, 5 PPP), so last year's numbers are a small sample.
