Kiefer Sherwood

Consensus #72 · LW14 · tier 8Week 5: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Sherwood is a second-line right wing and second power-play unit forward on a young Sharks team, and the reporting I found is thin on any debate about him.

Role

Sources checked 26 October. Inside the Rink's 24 October projection for San Jose at Boston has him on line 2 with Ivar Stenberg and Michael Misa. The same preview has him on the second power-play unit with Misa, Tyler Toffoli, Igor Chernyshov and Jacob Trouba. ESPN's line page, seen in a search result and not fetched, lists the same line and PP2. A beat-writer warmup tweet from Ottawa also shows Stenberg-Misa-Sherwood, and a separate power-play tweet shows him on PP2 with Misa. FSRoundup shows 15:25 TOI and a PK2 tag, but that is an aggregator and I did not verify it. It also says he was promoted to PP2 on Oct 21 after having no power-play time. Competition for the spot includes Mason Marchment, Collin Graf and Toffoli, who skate on the third line in the latest projection. I did not fetch Daily Faceoff. The wire note says day-to-day, and I found no practice report or coach update that explains it.

The case for

He has held the second-line right wing spot next to the 2026 No. 2 pick Stenberg and Misa in the lineups I found. Since Oct 21 he has also had PP2 time. He hits and forechecks hard: last season he had 68 hits in 12 games, and a preseason Sharks blog piece said he forechecks relentlessly. Playing with talented young linemates and on a power-play unit gives him a path to points.

The case against

His own line has moved often. Early in the season he was on a Stenberg line with Alexander Wennberg, and he was projected on the third line as late as 19 October, so the second-line job is not secure. His 12 games last season produced 6 points and a -4 rating, and an aggregator's advanced-stats percentiles put his offense and defense at the low end. The PP2 role is recent, and the first unit is built around other players. The day-to-day wire note adds short-term uncertainty.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on where he plays now: line 2 right wing and PP2 in every projection I found. I found no analyst argument about him. Placement has varied across sources, so the open question is whether he stays on the Stenberg-Misa line or moves back down. The day-to-day injury detail is not explained in anything I found.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
