Nikolaj Ehlers
Ehlers is a second-line left wing on the top power-play unit for Carolina, and the current lines have him in a scoring role rather than the third-line spot he was projected for in the preseason.
Role
Daily Faceoff's Hurricanes page (fetched Oct 26, last updated Oct 25 from the Oct 24 game vs. St. Louis) lists the forward lines in order, with Ehlers on the second line between Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake. The same page puts him on the first power-play unit with Svechnikov, Aho, Blake and Gostisbehere. It does not list him on either penalty-kill unit. Beat-writer tweets on gamedaytweets.com show the same Ehlers-Stankoven-Blake trio and a PP1 of Aho, Blake, Ehlers and Svechnikov with Gostisbehere, but I could not date them. Inside the Rink's preview for the Oct 22 game at Edmonton also lists Ehlers-Stankoven-Blake. Jarvis, Kotkaniemi and Martinook skate on the third line, and Stankoven runs the second power-play unit. I found no ice-time figures for this season.
He is paired with Stankoven and Blake, who drive the second line, and he also has a spot on PP1 next to Aho and Svechnikov. Carolina is 8-2-1 through its Oct 22 game at Edmonton, so the lines are producing. The offense has depth, and Ehlers has a clear route to both even-strength and power-play points.
Carolina's top-nine is crowded, and Ehlers has already moved around: the preseason plan had him on a third line with Staal and Martinook. A sportsnaut page, indexed 17 days ago, still shows that third-line trio, so his place on line 2 is not guaranteed. The PP1 spot is also shared with several high-end forwards, and Jarvis, Kotkaniemi and Stankoven all sit on or near the power play. A scoring slump or a lineup shuffle could move him back down. Our data shows he played only 13 games last season, so I have no full-season workload to project from.
Where analysts split
The preseason question, per Daily Faceoff's team preview from about two months ago, was whether Ehlers, Svechnikov or both would join Aho on the first line, or whether Ehlers would return to a third line with Staal and Martinook. The current lines have settled that for now: Ehlers is on line 2 and PP1. I found no current analyst split beyond whether that placement holds.
