Will Cuylle

Consensus #99 · LW20 · tier 8Week 5: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Cuylle is a third-line left wing on the Rangers right now, in a depth role with a bit of penalty-kill and secondary power-play work, and I found no analyst commentary on where he goes from here.

Role

Forever Blueshirts' projected lines page (fetched Nov 2, showing PuckPedia's projection for the Nov 3 game vs. St. Louis) has Cuylle on the third line with center Noah Laba and right wing Gabe Perreault. The top line is Dorofeyev, Zibanejad and Lafreniere. The second line is Kartye, Miller and Bjorkstrand. Eeli Tolvanen is on the fourth line at left wing. That page's change log says Perreault dropped to third-line right wing on Oct 30, and I read no other change involving Cuylle. Dobber's Frozen Tools last-game page showed Cuylle-Laba-Perreault at even strength in the Nov 1 game against Edmonton, with Cuylle also skating with Tolvanen in a shorter shift. An Oct 11 Frozen Tools game log listed Tolvanen-Cuylle-Laba at even strength, so the wingers around him have changed. An ESPN line-combo page, indexed 14 days ago and not re-read today, listed him on the second power-play unit and the first penalty-kill pair with Laba. The Oct 11 log showed only 26 seconds of power-play time for him. Nothing I read gives his current power-play unit or his ice time this season, so I am not stating either. Last season's line was 15 games and 241 minutes of ice time, with 8 points, 33 shots and 62 hits.

The case for

The upside case rests on the role signals, not on commentary I found. He has been tied to Laba on the penalty kill, and he has had some power-play time, which can add points and shots beyond even strength. His last-season output was 33 shots and 62 hits in 15 games, so he brings shots and physicality when he plays. He is also on a line with Perreault, a young playmaker. The line could move up if the second line struggles, but I found no reporting saying that is planned.

The case against

He sits third in the left-wing order behind Dorofeyev and Kartye. Third-line even-strength minutes and a secondary power-play role cap his scoring. His Nov 1 shift with Perreault and Laba was about 5:45 in the Dobber data, and the shot attempts were even (5 for, 5 against). Last season he played only 15 games, so his usage and production over a full season are untested in the data I hold. The lines have changed several times in the past two weeks, which means nothing in his spot is secure.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his current slot, because I found no analyst or beat-writer commentary arguing either way. The open question I can name, without anyone disputing it in what I read, is whether he stays on the third line or moves up to the second-line left wing, where Kartye currently plays.

Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
