Zach Hyman

Consensus #82 · LW17 · tier 8Week 5: 3 gamesIRUpdated Nov 2

Hyman is an injured winger with no announced return date, and his place on the second line and first power-play unit is open until he is healthy and back in the lineup.

Role

The Oilers put him on injured reserve on Oct 28 with a stiff neck. Head coach Mike Babcock said he would miss at least a week, and the team has given no specific timeline (Yahoo Sports, Global News/Canadian Press, Oct 28 to 29). Before the injury, the Morning Puck page's expected lines for Oct 24 vs. Toronto, sourced to NHL.com, had him on the second line at left wing. His linemates were Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at center and Kasperi Kapanen on the right. In the Oilers Nation game preview for the Nov 1 Rangers game, that line is Dach, Nugent-Hopkins and Kapanen, with Colton Dach at left wing and no Hyman. I could not read a current Daily Faceoff power-play unit. The fetched Daily Faceoff page was stale, with a July 2026 timestamp and 2024-25 text, so I am not using it. The cached Daily Faceoff snippet showed Kapanen on the first power-play unit, but I could not confirm its date, so I am not relying on it. I have no ice-time figures. Dach is the one winger I saw in his spot on the Nov 1 line, and I have no confirmed reporting on who competes for his minutes beyond that.

The case for

The neck injury looks minor. Babcock called the news "way better" than expected after the scary hit into the glass (TSN, Oct 28), and NHL.com quoted him saying the team is just being extra cautious. Hyman was a regular in the top-six rotation before the injury. The one-goal, six-game start came while he was also dealing with an earlier upper-body injury, so the optimists can argue he has not yet played healthy.

The case against

This is his second injured reserve stint this season. He missed six games with an upper-body injury suffered in the opener, and he was injured again in his fifth game back. TSN notes last season was also injury-plagued, with him missing the first 19 games and five more in April. He is 34 and has one goal in six games. The Oilers are thin on healthy forwards. The team won 4-0 without him, and Dach has since appeared on the second line in his place. FantraxHQ's writer doubted he was fully healthy even when he played.

Where analysts split

The open question is how fast he returns and what he returns to. Babcock's "at least a week" is a floor, not a date. FantraxHQ's injury report guessed he would miss Thursday and might be a game-time decision Saturday. That is one writer's guess, not team information. I found no analyst split on his role. It is also unconfirmed whether he gets his second-line spot and power-play time back automatically once healthy.

Injury: IR: assessed real

Neck injury, on IR

He's on IR with a neck injury and an expected return date of Nov. 3, meaning he'll miss at least several games before that point.

What would change this: Confirmation he's practicing/activated off IR around or near Nov. 3

Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
