Anfernee Simons
Simons is the Sixers' scoring guard off the bench, but his first four games show a streaky, inefficient shooter whose minutes have varied.
Role
He has come off the bench in all four games and has not started. His minutes were 25 against the Knicks on Oct 20, 17 against Cleveland on Oct 22, 20 against Milwaukee on Oct 24 and about 27 against Detroit on Oct 25 (NBA.com and Yahoo game logs). The Sixers' starting five is reported as Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown, LeBron James and Embiid. One Rip City Project piece (Oct 20 game) said Nick Nurse ran a short rotation in which Simons and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope were the only bench players above 20 minutes. It said Dean Wade should join them once he returns from an ankle injury. I found no reported usage rate. The wire note that he is questionable against the Knicks is out of date: he played that game on Oct 20 after missing the preseason with hamstring tightness. I found no newer injury report, so his current hamstring status is unconfirmed.
The optimists argue he is the ideal sixth man on a team with a strong starting five and a thin bench. He is a microwave scorer who gives the offense a release valve, and he supplied bench scoring and third-quarter spark in the opener (13 points, 3-of-8 from three). Liberty Ballers and Rip City Project both framed the combo-guard bench role as a good fit. The Sixers' starters are not high-volume shooters beyond Maxey, which leaves Simons room to take shots.
The skeptics point to the efficiency and consistency problems that have followed him since Portland. After the opener he shot 0-for-4 in 17 minutes against Cleveland and was a team-worst minus 21 in the first half (Rip City Project). He then shot 1-of-7 against Milwaukee and 2-of-10 against Detroit, for 4 and 5 points. Fadeaway World graded the Detroit game a C-. He plays behind a star-heavy starting group, and SI and NBC Sports-based coverage noted that a reserve role may cap his minutes.
Where analysts split
The disagreement is whether Simons is a reliable sixth man or a streaky scorer whose minutes depend on whether his shots fall. The optimists point to the role and the shot volume. The skeptics point to his 4-of-21 shooting over the last two games and his history of inefficiency. The sources I read did not disagree on his role. He is a reserve guard and no one reports a starting job for him.
