Bones Hyland
Hyland began the season outside the Timberwolves' rotation, and Anthony Edwards' knee injury has opened a bench-guard role for him that is tied to Edwards' absence.
Role
Early reporting has him outside the rotation, with only situational minutes, at the start of the season. After Edwards' knee injury he moved into a bigger bench role. Dunking with Wolves (dated within the last few days) says Edwards is out roughly two months. ESPN's fantasy blurb has Hyland with two straight games of double-digit points and more than 15 minutes, and a 19-point, 8-assist game in 20 minutes against the Clippers. That blurb's date is unclear, so treat the Clippers line with caution. Ayo Dosunmu had been starting, and the other names in the guard group are LaMelo Ball, Donte DiVincenzo, Jaylen Clark, Terrence Shannon Jr. and Zyon Pullin. I have not read a minutes tracker or a depth chart, so I cannot give a minutes figure or usage rate.
Dunking with Wolves argues that Hyland has been what a backup guard should be. He creates his own shot off the dribble, which the bench unit lacks, and he plays at the pace Minnesota likes. The site says he is making a case to stay in the rotation even once Edwards returns.
Hyland was erratic last season and dropped out of the playoff rotation. Dunking with Wolves says the team has little invested in him and that a slow stretch could remove him quickly. It also cites his slight frame as a defensive limit. Sporting News coverage suggests Jaylen Clark may have an early edge over him in coach Chris Finch's plans. The current bigger role exists mainly because Edwards is hurt.
Where analysts split
The question is whether Hyland keeps a rotation spot after Edwards returns, which is expected in roughly two months. Dunking with Wolves is split on this: one piece says he is earning a lasting role, another says his spot is tenuous. Sporting News and Fox Sports headlines lean toward Clark getting the nod over him.
