Bub Carrington

Consensus #239 · PG84 · tier 7Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 26

Carrington is a second-unit guard behind Trae Young, and the only current game evidence is a 19-minute bench role in the opener, so his minutes are likely to be modest and could change from night to night.

Role

Rotowire's note from the season opener, a win over Milwaukee, has him coming off the bench for 19 minutes with 10 points, four assists and two steals (as indexed 16 days ago). Projected depth charts have Trae Young starting at point guard, with Carrington and Tre Mann behind him. Crafted NBA's depth chart snippet shows Carrington as Young's backup at 17 projected minutes, but that is a search snippet and I did not fetch the page. Rotowire and CBS say Mann will battle Carrington for the reserve minutes but is not expected to have a significant role. Tre Johnson is the projected starting shooting guard in the Fadeaway World and Yahoo preseason pieces. I did not find a usage rate, and I have no confirmed word on whether he sits back-to-backs. His 2025-26 role swung with injuries: Rotowire notes had him starting and playing 35 to 38 minutes while Young and Bilal Coulibaly were out, then moving back to the bench when players returned. Our data line for last season shows only 3 games, and I could not reconcile that with the coverage I found.

The case for

Fadeaway World says he would start for plenty of rebuilding teams, citing a jump in three-point shooting to 40.8% on 5.0 attempts per game last season. A fanrecap piece says he was the only Wizard to make more than one three in the opener. The team has few reliable shooters, so his floor spacing is needed. A Yahoo/SI piece from two days ago calls him a potential key rotation piece for multiple seasons and praises his playmaking in 15 minutes. If Young or another guard misses time, he has recently moved straight into 30-plus minutes and a starting spot.

The case against

The Wizards are now deep enough that someone gets squeezed, as DAZN put it, and the backcourt and wings are crowded with Tre Johnson, Kyshawn George, Coulibaly, Khris Middleton and Mann. Fox Sports ran a piece suggesting his rotation time could shrink after the Mann trade. A fanrecap piece notes he rarely drives to the rim. CBS and Rotowire notes from last season say Washington shuffled its rotation nightly, which makes his production hard to rely on. Most of his big-minute stretches came when others were hurt.

Where analysts split

The split is whether Carrington is the clear first guard off the bench or whether Mann and the wing logjam cut his minutes. The Fox Sports piece and Rotowire's Mann note treat it as a real competition. The Substack piece and the preseason projections put Mann third and say he should not out-compete Carrington. Beat-writer rotation reporting after the opener would settle it, and I did not find any.
