Damian Lillard
Lillard is Portland's starting guard and a secondary creator in his first season back from the torn left Achilles, and by his own account he doesn't plan to play heavy minutes.
Role
He has played 24 to 33 minutes in the Blazers' first five games, per NBA.com's game log (checked Nov 2): 24 at PHX, 33 at SAC, 31 at LAL and 27 at UTA. I did not see the minutes for his Oct 29 home game. FTN Fantasy showed him starting his first three games. His ESPN 2026-27 usage rate is 23.5 and he averages 21.7 points, though I don't know how many games that covers. The guard room is crowded: NBA.com's preview says Ja Morant, Scoot Henderson and Jrue Holiday are also point guards. Lillard said he doesn't need 35-plus minutes in the regular season. The wire says he is resting for a preseason game against London. I could not date that against the regular-season log, so I have not folded it into his workload. I found no confirmed back-to-back rest plan.
Roundtable.io calls him a "starting guard and secondary creator." The argument is that Morant's downhill game and Deni Avdija's playmaking should give him easier looks than he got in his first stint, so a lower-minute role could still be efficient. Early results support this: 25 points in 24 minutes at Phoenix and 21 to 22 points in three more games.
He is 36, and his first 82-game workload since the Achilles tear is untested. He has said he won't push his minutes. His shooting has been inefficient: 7-18, 5-12 and 6-17 from the field in three of the five games, per NBA.com's game log. With Morant, Holiday and Henderson also needing guard minutes, his volume could shrink, and rest days are plausible.
Where analysts split
Analysts are split on how Lillard and Morant share the floor and who gets the primary ball-handling. That decides whether Lillard is a lower-usage floor spacer or still a high-volume scorer. Minutes are a second open question: his own comments point toward managed workloads, but his early-season minutes have been in the high 20s to low 30s. I did not find a named beat writer or minutes tracker laying out a rotation, so this split comes from preview pieces and his quotes.
Research confidence: thin. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
