Darius Garland

Consensus #206 · PG74 · tier 9Week 3: 3 gamesUpdated Nov 2

Garland is the Clippers' lead guard and primary offensive engine for the rest of this season, with a heavy workload while the roster is thin.

Role

He started the Clippers' season opener on Oct. 22 and played 32 minutes. He then played 37 minutes against the Lakers and 36 against the Thunder. He played 31 minutes in a Timberwolves loss, per RotoWire items on CBS Sports and Fox Sports. Fox Sports (Oct. 30) says Bradley Beal (knee), Brandon Ingram (heel) and Max Strus (foot) are sidelined, so the offense runs through Garland. Parlae's minutes model, dated today, projects him at about 37.8 a game with Ingram out against the Warriors, a gain of roughly 7.3 minutes. Kris Dunn is also projected at 34.7 minutes in that model. Rookie Keaton Wagler, the No. 5 pick, is the young guard Garland is meant to help develop. I found no reporting on his exact usage rate or on back-to-back rest plans.

The case for

He is the highest-paid Clipper and the clear first option while the roster is depleted. He opened with 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting, then scored 26, 16 and 24 in his next three games. NBC Sports (Oct. 30) calls him one of the team's primary playmakers and a strong option if his health holds. The same coverage notes the injuries should keep his minutes and touches high.

The case against

He was limited by toe surgery last season and looked slightly diminished once he returned. His turnovers are a concern: Fox Sports flagged nine in the Lakers game, and NBC ties the high count to the injury-thinned rotation. The Clippers are described as starting a rebuilding season, and they have lost to the Lakers, Thunder and Timberwolves, two of them by 18 points or more. Efficiency and durability both look shaky if the supporting cast stays hurt, and a 37-minute workload raises that risk.

Where analysts split

Broad agreement on his role as the lead guard. The only open question is whether his heavy minutes and usage hold or shrink when Beal, Ingram and Strus return. I found no analyst writing that argues either side directly.
