Darryn Peterson

Consensus #159 · PG58 · tier 7Week 3: 4 gamesUpdated Oct 19

Darryn Peterson is a 19-year-old rookie and the No. 2 pick in the 2026 draft. He has started in the preseason games I found and is the Jazz's featured young scorer. His rookie-year efficiency is the open question, since he has no NBA regular-season history.

Role

The Salt Lake Tribune reported that Utah started George, Peterson, Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Nurkic in the Oct. 4 preseason opener at Denver. CBS/RotoWire (Oct. 12) calls him the penciled-in starting shooting guard for 2026-27. TalkBasket's recap of the Oct. 12 win over San Antonio has him leading Utah's starting lineup with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, five assists and three rebounds. CBS lists 24 minutes for him that night. RotoWire also logged a team-high 22 minutes in an earlier game. Keyonte George, Markkanen and Jackson play alongside him. CBS shows a RotoWire item about him struggling with his shot in a game after Oct. 12. I did not read that item, so I have no details. These are exhibition observations, not a settled rotation. Regular-season minutes, usage and any rest plans have not been reported in what I found (checked Oct. 19). I found no injury designation.

The case for

Coach Will Hardy called him a really talented offensive player on Oct. 6 and said he is sophisticated for his age in pace and footwork. After a 3-point, 1-of-5 debut on Oct. 4, he scored 23 points on Oct. 6 against Denver, with 9-of-12 on non-3-point shots, midrange work and and-ones through contact. The Tribune said he looked in control and was decisive. He then had 14 points and five assists on Oct. 12. Optimists see a rookie who adjusted after one game and creates his own shot as a starter.

The case against

His outside shooting has been poor. He was 0-for-2 from three on Oct. 4 and 1-for-6 on Oct. 6. His Oct. 4 debut looked tentative, and Yahoo described him as tentative. The Yahoo recap of the Oct. 6 game said he is not yet adjusted to NBA pace, though he shows an ability to make reads. He also had a turnover and an offensive foul in one third-quarter stretch on Oct. 6. Exhibition samples are small and the opponents' rotations are unknown, so none of this is regular-season evidence.

Where analysts split

The coverage I found does not show a real analyst split. The one open question is how fast his decision-making and three-point shooting settle in as a rookie starter. I found no reporting arguing he would lose the starting job.

Research confidence: reported. Outlooks are grounded in web search over current reporting and refreshed through the season.
